In a configuration which uses BIND's default settings the vulnerable code path is not exposed, but a server can be rendered vulnerable by explicitly setting valid values for the tkey-gssapi-keytab or tkey-gssapi-credentialconfiguration options. Although the default configuration is not vulnerable, GSS-TSIG is frequently used in networks where BIND is integrated with Samba, as well as in mixed-server environments that combine BIND servers with Active Directory domain controllers. The most likely outcome of a successful exploitation of the vulnerability is a crash of the named process. However, remote code execution, while unproven, is theoretically possible. Affects: BIND 9.5.0 -> 9.11.27, 9.12.0 -> 9.16.11, and versions BIND 9.11.3-S1 -> 9.11.27-S1 and 9.16.8-S1 -> 9.16.11-S1 of BIND Supported Preview Edition. Also release versions 9.17.0 -> 9.17.1 of the BIND 9.17 development branch","provenance":"source","from":"CVE.org"},"summary":{"text":"A buffer overflow in BIND9's GSSAPI security policy negotiation affects servers that use GSS-TSIG, and it is only reachable when the tkey-gssapi-keytab or tkey-gssapi-credential options are explicitly set, since the default configuration does not expose the vulnerable code path. An attacker with network access, and no authentication or user interaction, could send crafted requests to trigger the overflow, most likely crashing the named process, though remote code execution is considered theoretically possible but unproven.","provenance":"ai","model":"claude-haiku-5-5","generatedAt":"2026-10-29T07:15:13Z"},"cvss":{"score":8.1,"severity":"HIGH","version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","provenance":"source","from":"CVE.org CNA"},"epss":{"score":0.64161,"percentile":0.99227,"date":"2026-10-29","provenance":"source"},"kev":null,"vulncheckKev":null,"exploited":false,"otx":{"pulseCount":1,"pulses":[{"name":"Thor Lite Scan - 10.7.15 - Ubuntu Scan on Archived Files","url":"https://otx.alienvault.com/pulse/664cc3c1938ed0b9abf026a2","created":"2024-05-21"}],"provenance":"machine"},"cwes":[],"references":[{"url":"https://kb.isc.org/v1/docs/cve-2020-8625","tags":["x_refsource_CONFIRM"]},{"url":"https://www.debian.org/security/2021/dsa-4857","tags":["vendor-advisory","x_refsource_DEBIAN"]},{"url":"http://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2021/02/19/1","tags":["mailing-list","x_refsource_MLIST"]},{"url":"https://lists.debian.org/debian-lts-announce/2021/02/msg00029.html","tags":["mailing-list","x_refsource_MLIST"]},{"url":"http://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2021/02/20/2","tags":["mailing-list","x_refsource_MLIST"]},{"url":"https://www.zerodayinitiative.com/advisories/ZDI-21-195/","tags":["x_refsource_MISC"]},{"url":"https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/package-announce%40lists.fedoraproject.org/message/QWCMBOSZOJIIET7BWTRYS3HLX5TSDKHX/","tags":["vendor-advisory","x_refsource_FEDORA"]},{"url":"https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/package-announce%40lists.fedoraproject.org/message/KYXAF7G45RXDVNUTWWCI2CVTHRZ67LST/","tags":["vendor-advisory","x_refsource_FEDORA"]},{"url":"https://security.netapp.com/advisory/ntap-20210319-0001/","tags":["x_refsource_CONFIRM"]},{"url":"https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/package-announce%40lists.fedoraproject.org/message/EBTPWRQWRQEJNWY4NHO4WLS4KLJ3ERHZ/","tags":["vendor-advisory","x_refsource_FEDORA"]},{"url":"https://cert-portal.siemens.com/productcert/pdf/ssa-389290.pdf","tags":["x_refsource_CONFIRM"]}],"techniques":[],"reports":[],"affected":[],"advisories":[],"euvd":{"id":"EUVD-2020-29473","url":"https://euvd.enisa.europa.eu/vulnerability/EUVD-2020-29473","exploited":false,"exploitedSince":null,"provenance":"source"},"exploits":[],"exploitSources":null,"exploitRefs":[],"flow":[],"timeline":[{"date":"2021-02-17","kind":"published","label":"Published (CVE.org)","url":"https://www.cve.org/CVERecord?id=CVE-2020-8625","provenance":"source"}],"speed":{"daysToPublicExploit":null,"firstExploitFrom":null,"daysToKev":null},"priority":{"score":26.2,"factors":[{"name":"In a KEV catalog","points":0.0,"detail":"not listed"},{"name":"Recent KEV listing","points":0.0,"detail":"not listed"},{"name":"Known ransomware use","points":0.0,"detail":"not known"},{"name":"EPSS percentile","points":19.85,"detail":"percentile 0.9923"},{"name":"Named in threat reports","points":0.0,"detail":"0 reports"},{"name":"Public exploit code","points":0.0,"detail":"none found"},{"name":"Mentioned in OTX pulses","points":0.68,"detail":"1 pulse"},{"name":"CVSS severity","points":5.67,"detail":"base score 8.1"},{"name":"End-of-life product","points":0.0,"detail":"supported or unknown"}]}}
