Hildegard: New TeamTNT Cryptojacking Malware Targeting Kubernetes
BOtB can perform a container breakout using a known vulnerability such as CVE-2019-5736.
The flaw is a file-descriptor mishandling issue, tied to /proc/self/exe, in runc through 1.0-rc6 as used in Docker before 18.09.2 and other products. An attacker who can run a command as root in a container, either by starting a new container from an attacker-controlled image or by using docker exec on an existing container they already have write access to, can overwrite the host runc binary and gain root access on the host.
runc through 1.0-rc6, as used in Docker before 18.09.2 and other products, allows attackers to overwrite the host runc binary (and consequently obtain host root access) by leveraging the ability to execute a command as root within one of these types of containers: (1) a new container with an attacker-controlled image, or (2) an existing container, to which the attacker previously had write access, that can be attached with docker exec. This occurs because of file-descriptor mishandling, related to /proc/self/exe.
First seen exploited 4 years after disclosure. Public exploit code (Metasploit) was available 41 days before disclosure.
A fix was bypassed or incomplete once over 5 years.
Why these are linked: Link confidenceHow strong the evidence is that two CVEs are related. High: stated in the CVE text or linked in an advisory, or the same code was patched one release apart. Medium: the same code, or a version step plus a similar description. Low: similar description only.
