RARLAB UnRAR Directory Traversal Vulnerability

RARLAB · UnRAR

Summary

RARLAB UnRAR versions before 6.12 on Linux and UNIX contain a directory traversal flaw in the extract (unpack) routine, which does not restrict where extracted files are written. The issue does not affect WinRAR or Android RAR. An attacker who can supply a crafted archive that the victim extracts with UnRAR can write files outside the intended extraction directory, for example creating ~/.ssh/authorized_keys, and no prior authentication or privileges are needed for the archive delivery itself.

Official description · NVD

RARLAB UnRAR before 6.12 on Linux and UNIX allows directory traversal to write to files during an extract (aka unpack) operation, as demonstrated by creating a ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file. NOTE: WinRAR and Android RAR are unaffected.
