Apache HTTP Server Improper Escaping of Output Vulnerability
Apache · HTTP Server
Apache HTTP Server 2.4.59 and earlier contains an improper escaping of output flaw in mod_rewrite, affecting substitutions in server context that begin with a backreference or variable as the first segment. An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit it without user interaction, by sending requests that map URLs to filesystem locations the server is permitted to serve but that are not intended to be directly reachable, resulting in code execution or source code disclosure.
Improper escaping of output in mod_rewrite in Apache HTTP Server 2.4.59 and earlier allows an attacker to map URLs to filesystem locations that are permitted to be served by the server but are not intentionally/directly reachable by any URL, resulting in code execution or source code disclosure. Substitutions in server context that use a backreferences or variables as the first segment of the substitution are affected. Some unsafe RewiteRules will be broken by this change and the rewrite flag "UnsafePrefixStat" can be used to opt back in once ensuring the substitution is appropriately constrained.

Improper escaping in Apache HTTP Server versions 2.4.59 and before permits code execution or disclosure of source code, as well as session hijacking and a potential full system compromise. An attacker can use a crafted URL to perform a traversal attack to trick the Apache server into reading sensitive files.
