Linux Kernel Use of Uninitialized Resource Vulnerability

Linux · Kernel

Summary

The Linux kernel's HID core, which handles Human Interface Device report processing, allocated its report buffer without zero-initialisation, so memory left over from earlier use could persist in it. A local user with low privileges and no user interaction could craft a specially designed HID report to read this residual kernel memory, potentially disclosing sensitive information.

Official description · NVD

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: HID: core: zero-initialize the report buffer Since the report buffer is used by all kinds of drivers in various ways, let's zero-initialize it during allocation to make sure that it can't be ever used to leak kernel memory via specially-crafted report.

MITRE CTID mapping of the KEV entry · primary impact

Attackers can use malicious Human Interface Devices (keyboard, mouse, etc.) to trigger a kernel-level memory leak due to improper initialization and use of uninitialized resources. This leads to the returning of the uninitialized kernel data, which can be collected and exfiltrated.
