Linux Kernel Improper Ownership Management Vulnerability

Linux · Kernel

Summary

The flaw is an improper ownership management issue in the OverlayFS subsystem of the Linux kernel, where a setuid file with capabilities copied from a nosuid mount into another mount is not handled correctly due to a uid mapping bug. A local user with low privileges and no user interaction can exploit it to gain unauthorized execution of the setuid file with capabilities and escalate their privileges on the system.

Official description · NVD

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel, where unauthorized access to the execution of the setuid file with capabilities was found in the Linux kernel’s OverlayFS subsystem in how a user copies a capable file from a nosuid mount into another mount. This uid mapping bug allows a local user to escalate their privileges on the system.
